The bandeau bikini top is certainly not a new invention with illustrations of women wearing a beandeau style swimwear outfit dating back as far as Roman times. That said, it's re-emergence as a fashionable swimwear item didn't happen until around the 1940's when the two piece swimsuit really became fashionable.
The bandeau style may have a rear clip or be made of an elasticated material which is held in place by its elasticity and the breasts themselves, hence the bandeau is more suited to larger chested women. Small chested women may find the tight fitting elastic nature of a bandeau top to flatten their breasts further giving a more boyish flat-chested look which they will probably wish to avoid.
The somewhat precarious balance of elasticity and firmness of breast to hold the bandeau top in place has led many manufacturers to include a strap for extra support and reassurance.
