A tankini is a two-piece swimsuit offering the same modest styling of a one-piece swimsuit combined with the utility of a bikini whilst sacrificing little of the sexy style. The tankini style consists of a tummy hiding tank or vest top with a figure flattering pair of bikini briefs which can be easily removed for such things as a bathroom break. Tankinis are great for covering up those little belly bulges and many offer built-in cups and bust support as well, or tummy flattening panels. Tankini History and Buying Advice
The tankini swimsuit was designer to meet the needs of women who wanted the same flexibility offered by a bikini (try using the bathroom in a one-piece without getting naked) but without baring all their wobbly bits in public. Whilst still a new fashion, it has been hot to catch on as women realise it can be just as sexy as a bikini but more modest and offers more flexibility than the traditional one-piece.
The tankini style consists of a pair of bikini briefs combined with a vest top which ends anywhere from slightly above the midriff to below the hips. Various spin-offs from the traditional tankini style include the ruched tankini and camikini. Ruched tankinis are great for women with long torsos or boyish figures as they can be adjusted and provide waist definition whilst camikinis pair the tankini bottoms with more of a camisole top offering greater support for larger bust sizes.
The tankini top is quite tight fitting to adhere to keep a body shape which also means you are unlikely to lose it when a wave comes crashing down (unlike a bikini which is more of a gamble!). Tankinis are not a risk-free choice however as many are quite high cut and still expose that belly area. Make your choice wisely and if your belly is your main problem area opt for a flattering one-piece style instead.
